A couple of days back while using Google webmasters tool I saw a Google video giving details on Rich snippets and how to use them. I was very curious to see a couple of examples describing how to use it on my website so that search engines can better process and read my valuable data. Before I give more details on using Rich snippets and the tools associated along with them. I would like to tell you what the problem for search websites is in order to find out what data your website represents and how Rich snippets help search engines to better read and evaluate your valuable data. Normally programmers or webmasters when they develop a website or an application they design the database in such a way that relevant information is stored in relevant fields. A typical travel location attraction Database table would normally have fields like id, name, description, image, authorname, authorphoto. When this information is transformed on to the webpage unfortunately the ordering and descriptiveness of the data goes for a toss. HTML markup cannot completely describe the data in a way which would make it easy for search engines to read it in a fast and efficient way.
Rich snippets are easily more readable and provide easy and better information to search engines about what the content contains. The rich snippets begins by telling the search websites what type of content the markup is showing. Here is a list of commonly used types CreativeWork, Book, Movie, MusicRecording, Recipe, TVSeries, AudioObject, ImageObject, VideoObject, Event, Organization, Person, Place, LocalBusiness, Restaurant, Product, Offer, AggregateOffer, Review, AggregateRating.
Just by adding these few additional mark up you make your website better readable to the search engine and this could also help your website coming up in search engines. Search engines including Bing, Google, Yahoo! and Yandex rely on this markup to improve the display of search results, making it easier for people to find the right web pages.
The question now arises is that how can you test the markup you have included on your web page. Google provides you with a tool through which you can evaluate and test the mark up you have implemented on your web page. Link to the Google Rich snippets tool http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets besides Google you can find more information and good examples on http://schema.org.
On travel websites the type TouristAttraction can be used effectively to provide Search engines with correct information.
